- Identification and Important Documents:
- National Identification Card (ID) — This will be used to identify you in the hospital.
- Insurance Card – This will be used to process your payments through your insurance in case you will not pay in cash.
- Antenatal Care (ANC) booklet – The booklet contains the records of your antenatal care. These are helpful in enabling health personnel to understand the history of your pregnancy.
- Hospital Admission Letter – This letter contains details from your doctors with their verification for your admission to hospital.
- Birth plan (if you have one) – This plan states your preferences for labour and delivery. It will guide the doctors on what you would like done during labour and delivery, for example, whether the process should be recorded or not. You should understand that not everything will go exactly as planned.
- Clothing
- Maternity clothes – Loose clothing is preferable; it could be a bathrobe, a nightgown, or even a leso to ensure that you stay comfortable throughout the labour. This clothing should have an open front to ease nursing.
- Going home clothes – Choose a comfortable outfit to wear when going home from the hospital.
- Comfortable maternity/nursing bras – Underwire-free bras are more comfortable for nursing.
- Underwear – Comfortable, high-waisted panties are able to accommodate postpartum changes.
- Slippers -Slippers are easy and quick to wear and walk around in hospital during labour.
- Warm Socks – Socks will keep your feet warm, especially because most mothers complain of cold feet during labour.

- Makeup (optional) – Personal preference, if you like feeling made up.

- Hair tie, pin or clip (optional) – For keeping the hair away from your face.
